• The black-faced sheep by the wall turns its head now and then, breathes slowly and its breath clouds in the cold air.
• The hare twitches its head and long ears, breathes quickly and puffs a little breath into the night.
• The bell in the bellcote swings and rings out from time to time, then slowly comes to rest.
• Golden light from the open door breathes softly on the snow, and firelight flickers in the gothic windows.
• Every little lantern along the path flickers, along with the two lanterns the family carry.
• Far off, the farmhouse windows twinkle and smoke curls from its two chimneys.
• The crescent moon glows, stars twinkle, a shooting star passes and now and then a few birds fly over.
• Snow falls in three depths, with the odd gust lifting loose snow along the ground; snow slips from the church roof and the trees, and frost glints on the snow.
