If You Received a Card

Updated · Paper Lantern

Someone you know chose a card for you on Paper Lantern, wrote a message and asked us to deliver it. This page explains why the email reached you, how to tell that it is genuine, and what happens to your email address.

Why did I get this?

The sender typed your first name and email address so that we could deliver their card. Their name is in the subject line and at the top of the email: “Marie sent you a card”, for example, from “Marie via Paper Lantern”. The email contains the link to the card, the sender’s name, who we are and how to reach us, a short note about your data, and a link to stop receiving cards. Nothing else: no adverts, no offers, no tracking pixel.

How to recognize a genuine card

Fake “you have received a greeting card” emails have been used to trick people for years, so it is wise to be careful. A real Paper Lantern card always:

  • shows the sender’s name followed by “via Paper Lantern”, and comes from our own domain, paperlanterncards.com;
  • links only to paperlanterncards.com, never through a link shortener or another address;
  • opens in your web browser, with nothing to download and no attachment;
  • never asks for a password, a payment, bank details or any personal information to see the card.

If something does not match, do not click. Ask the sender, by phone or text, whether they sent you a card.

What we do with your email address

We use it for one thing only: delivering this card. We never use it for marketing, never sell it and never send you offers. Your email address is deleted as soon as the card’s email has left us. Your name stays on the card itself, with the message, and the card can be opened for three months after it is delivered; and the sender can delete it sooner (see our privacy notice, which is still being finalized). The card page has no adverts, no third-party trackers and no form to fill in.

Never receive cards again

Every card email and every card page has a link called “Never receive cards again”. If you use it, no one will be able to send you a card through Paper Lantern again. To make this work without keeping your address, we keep only a scrambled fingerprint of it, which cannot be turned back into the address.

Something wrong with a card?

If a card is upsetting, threatening or not meant for you, use the “Report this card” link under it, or write to us at hello@paperlanterncards.com. We read every report and tell you what we decided.
