Happy Winter Birthday Wishes

Updated · Paper Lantern · How we write our guides

A winter birthday comes with its own weather: dark afternoons, frost on the car, a cake carried in from the cold. People born between December and February also know the feeling of a birthday squeezed between holidays, or arriving in the flat gray weeks after them. A good message makes the day feel like theirs alone. The wishes below are grouped by month and by person, all written for this page; choose one, then add a line about the birthday person that nobody else could write.

Happy winter birthday wishes

For anyone with a birthday in the cold months.

  • Happy winter birthday! May your day be warm inside, bright outside and full of people who came out in the cold for you.
  • The snow is falling, the candles are lit and the whole season is celebrating with you. Happy birthday.
  • Winter has frost, firelight and hot chocolate, and still you’re the best thing about it. Happy birthday.
  • Wishing you a birthday as cozy as a blanket by the fire and as sparkling as frost in the morning sun.
  • May your birthday cake be rich, your socks be thick and your year ahead be wonderful.
  • Short days, long evenings and a whole lot of love: happy birthday to my favorite winter baby.
  • They say nothing grows in winter. They clearly never met you. Happy birthday.
  • Happy birthday to someone who makes the coldest month of the year feel warm.

Beautiful winter birthday wishes

A little more lyrical, for a card someone will keep.

  • May this birthday be like the first snowfall: quiet, bright and turning everything around you a little more beautiful.
  • Winter keeps its best light for the late afternoon, and so it is with you, glowing just when it’s needed. Happy birthday.
  • I hope your new year of life is like a winter morning after a storm: still, clear and full of open roads.
  • Under all the frost, the earth is getting ready for spring. May this birthday be the start of your own good season.
  • A candle for every year, and a wish for every candle. May each of them come true.
  • The world goes quiet in winter so that we can hear what matters. Today, what matters is you. Happy birthday.

December birthday wishes

For birthdays that share the month with all the lights and parties.

  • Happy December birthday! The whole world puts up decorations for your month, and quite right too.
  • I know December is busy, so let me say it clearly: today is about you, not the holidays. Happy birthday.
  • May your birthday get its own cake, its own candles and its own wrapping paper, with not a single snowman on it.
  • You arrived in the darkest month and have been bringing light ever since. Happy birthday.
  • A December birthday means you get to start every celebration a little early. Enjoy the head start.

For birthdays on December 24, 25 or 26, our page of birthday wishes for someone born at Christmas has messages that keep the two celebrations apart.

January birthday wishes

For birthdays in the month of fresh starts and empty wallets.

  • Happy January birthday! Everyone else is starting a new year; you get to start two.
  • When the decorations come down and the days feel long, here comes your birthday to save the month.
  • Forget the resolutions. Today you eat the cake, light the candles and make one big wish.
  • January needs a reason to celebrate, and every year you kindly provide it. Happy birthday.
  • May your birthday be the brightest day in a gray month, and your year ahead brighter still.
  • The tree is on the curb, the lights are in their box, and now the real party can start. Happy birthday.

February birthday wishes

For the last of the winter birthdays, when spring is almost in sight.

  • Happy birthday! Winter is nearly over, and you get to see it out in style.
  • The first snowdrops are coming up, and so is your big day. Happy February birthday.
  • A short month for a big celebration. Make every day of it count.
  • May your birthday bring the first hint of spring and the last good excuse for hot chocolate.

For children with a winter birthday

For little ones who want snow, sledges and as many candles as possible.

  • Happy birthday! I hope it snows enough for a snowman as tall as you are now.
  • Another year bigger and another candle brighter. Have the best birthday, and save me a slice of cake.
  • To our birthday snowflake: you’re one of a kind, and we love you to the North Pole and back.
  • Happy birthday to the bravest sledder on the hill. Hold on tight this year.
  • May your birthday be full of presents, hot cocoa, and staying up just a little past bedtime.

For family and friends

For the people who’ve been to every one of your winter birthday parties.

  • Happy birthday, Mom. You always said I was the best present you got that winter. You’re mine, every year.
  • To my brother: I’ll never forget the year your birthday party was snowed in and we ate the whole cake ourselves.
  • Happy birthday to my best friend. Let’s celebrate properly this year, with a fire, a good meal and no one checking the weather.
  • Dad, thanks for every birthday you drove through the snow to make happen. This one’s on us.
  • To my winter-born friend, who always brings the warmth: happy birthday, and here’s to a year as generous as you are.
  • Grandma, your birthday has always been our excuse for a midwinter gathering. Happy birthday, with all our love.

Short winter birthday wishes

For a text, a gift tag or a single line under the card’s greeting.

  • Warm wishes on a cold day.
  • Happy birthday, snowflake.
  • Candles lit, wishes made.
  • Born for the cozy season.
  • Have a toasty birthday.
  • Stay warm, have cake.

Birthdays at New Year

For birthdays on December 31 or January 1, when the whole world seems to be counting down with you.

  • Happy birthday! The fireworks tonight are for you. The rest of the world just happens to be joining in.
  • New year, new age, same wonderful you. Happy birthday.
  • You share your birthday with the first day of the year, so you’ll never forget to make a fresh start. Happy birthday.
  • Some people get a party. You get a party, a countdown and a sky full of fireworks. Happy birthday, lucky one.

Make it personal

Name the winter memory. The year it snowed on your birthday, the party in the power cut, the cake that froze on the porch. Every winter birthday has a story like that.

Keep the birthday separate. If the date sits close to Christmas, avoid “happy birthday and merry Christmas” in the same breath. One card for each, or at least one clear line saying today is their day.

Use the card. On our winter birthday card, the person can touch the card, or the button under it, to blow out the candles on the cake. A line like “Touch the card and make a wish” invites them to try it.

Questions

Which months count as a winter birthday?

In the Northern Hemisphere, December, January and February are usually thought of as winter, and that’s how this page groups them. If you’re writing to someone in Australia or South America, their winter birthday falls in June, July or August.

What do you write in a winter birthday card?

Start with the birthday greeting, add one wish for the year ahead, then something personal: a memory, a plan, or a reason you’re glad they’re in your life. A nod to the season (snow, the fire, the dark evenings) makes it feel written for the time of year.

Can a birthday card arrive on the day itself?

With an animated card, yes. You choose the day it should arrive, and the card goes out on that date.

Cards for winter birthdays

Our winter birthday cards are painted for people born in the cold months. In A Cake by the Window, a birthday cake with eight lit candles stands on a frosted windowsill, a tabby cat sleeps beside it and a robin waits on a snowy branch outside. Touch the card and the candles go out one after another, with thin wisps of smoke from each wick; after a few seconds they light again, ready for another wish. The greeting says Happy Birthday, or Many happy returns, and your message goes underneath.

For a birthday on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, a New Year card can say both things at once: Happy New Year on the card, happy birthday in your message.
