Christmas Messages for Your Husband or Wife

Updated · Paper Lantern · How we write our guides

The card to your husband or wife is the one you’re most likely to leave until the last minute, because you see each other every day and it feels like there’s nothing new to say. There always is. The year you’ve had together, the small things they did that made it easier, the Christmas you’re looking forward to: any one of those makes a better message than a long list of adjectives. Below are messages for husbands, wives and partners, sweet or funny, for couples together for one Christmas or for forty, and for those who’ll be apart this year.

Christmas messages for husband

For the man who hangs the lights, carries the tree, and still holds your hand on the walk home.

  • To my husband: the best present under our tree has been sitting beside me on the sofa all year. Merry Christmas, love.
  • Merry Christmas to the man who still warms my side of the bed before I get in. Thank you for a year of small kindnesses.
  • Every Christmas with you feels like coming in from the cold. I love you.
  • To my husband, who has untangled the same string of lights every December for eleven years without once throwing it out the window: Merry Christmas.
  • You make our house a home and every Christmas a celebration. Thank you, my love.
  • Merry Christmas to my best friend, my partner in everything and the only person I’d share the last mince pie with.
  • I’d choose you again, every Christmas, every year. Merry Christmas, husband.
  • Here’s to another year of you making the coffee and me pretending I could have done it myself. Merry Christmas, darling.

What to write in a Christmas card to husband

When you want to say more. A memory from the year, a thank-you, and something to look forward to.

  • Dear Paul, this year was a big one: the move, your mother’s illness, the long winter. Through all of it, you were the steady one, the one who made the tea and made me laugh. I don’t say it enough, so I’m writing it down: thank you. Let’s spend Christmas Day doing absolutely nothing together. All my love, Helen.
  • Dear Marcus, I was looking at our first Christmas photo the other day, the one where the tree is leaning and we’re both laughing. Twelve years on, the tree is straighter and I’m even happier. Merry Christmas to my favorite person. Love, Ana.

Christmas messages for wife

For the woman who remembers everyone’s presents, makes the house glow and somehow still finds time for you.

  • To my wife: you’ve made every Christmas we’ve shared the best one yet. I can’t wait for this one.
  • Merry Christmas to the woman who knows what everyone wants before they do. This year, let me look after you.
  • You light up our home more than every string of lights on our street put together. Merry Christmas, my love.
  • To my wife, who has never once let a Christmas card go unsent or a neighbor go unthanked: I’m so proud to be yours.
  • Merry Christmas, darling. You’re still the girl I’d walk through the snow for, even if my knees aren’t what they were.
  • Thank you for every Christmas Eve you’ve spent wrapping presents at the kitchen table long after I fell asleep. I noticed. I love you.
  • Of all the Christmases I’ve had, the ones with you are the only ones I want to remember. Merry Christmas.
  • Merry Christmas to my wife, my anchor and my favorite dance partner in the kitchen.

Christmas card messages for partner

For a partner, boyfriend or girlfriend, whatever you call each other.

  • Merry Christmas to my partner in everything: in crime, in adventure and in arguing over the thermostat.
  • To you, my favorite person to be cozy with: Merry Christmas.
  • This is our third Christmas together, and they keep getting better. I can’t wait to see what you’ve wrapped.
  • Happy Christmas, love. Thank you for being my home, wherever we happen to be living.
  • Merry Christmas to the one who makes ordinary days feel like holidays.
  • Whatever we’re doing this Christmas, I’m happy, because I’m doing it with you.

Romantic Christmas messages

For a card that’s only for them, to be opened when the rest of the house is asleep.

  • On the longest nights of the year, I’m grateful for the warmest hand to hold.
  • If I could have one thing this Christmas, it would be one more year exactly like this one, with you.
  • You’re the candle in my window and the reason I always want to come home.
  • Let’s take the long way back from the Christmas party, through the snow, the way we did on our first winter.
  • When the last guest has gone and the fire is low, you’re still the best part of my Christmas.
  • Merry Christmas to the one I’d kiss under the mistletoe, even without the mistletoe.

Gently funny messages for your other half

For couples who show love by teasing. Keep the joke one you’ll both laugh at.

  • Merry Christmas! I got you exactly what you asked for, mostly because you sent me the link three times.
  • Thank you for loving me even when I sing every carol in the car. Every single one.
  • To my husband, who says “I don’t want anything this year” every year and is delighted every time: Merry Christmas.
  • I love you more than the last roast potato. That’s how serious this is.
  • Merry Christmas to my wife, who has hidden my presents so well that I’m worried she’ll never find them again.

When you’re apart at Christmas

For couples separated by work, a deployment, a hospital stay or an ocean.

  • I’m counting the days, and there are only nineteen more of them. Keep my side of the bed warm.
  • We’ll open our presents together on the video call, at your nine in the evening and my nine in the morning. It’s a date.
  • This is the first Christmas we’ve spent apart, and I hope it’s the last. I love you across every mile.
  • I’ve hung your stocking anyway, and the dog keeps sniffing it. Come home safe.
  • When you look at the stars tonight, remember I’m looking at the same ones, waiting for you.
  • Christmas will start the moment you walk through the door, whatever the calendar says.

A first Christmas married

For newlyweds celebrating their first Christmas as husband and wife.

  • To my husband, on our first Christmas married: let’s start traditions we’ll still keep when we’re ninety.
  • Our first Christmas as a married couple, our first tree, our first burnt dinner. I’ve never been happier.
  • Merry Christmas, Mrs. Murphy. I like the sound of that more every day.
  • First Christmas as your wife. The ornament with our wedding date on it is right at the top of the tree.

After many years together

For couples who have shared decades of Christmases, with all the trees, children, moves and memories in between.

  • Forty Christmases, three houses, two children and five grandchildren, and you’re still the one I want to see first on Christmas morning.
  • We’ve had good Christmases and hard ones, and you made every one of them bearable and most of them wonderful.
  • After all these years, you still save me the crispiest potatoes. That’s love.
  • I’d marry you again tomorrow, and I’d do it at Christmas, in the snow, in front of everyone. Merry Christmas, my darling.

Closings for a card to your husband or wife

Closings

  • Yours, every Christmas and every day in between,
  • With all my love, now and always,
  • Your devoted wife (and chief present-wrapper),
  • Forever your husband,

Make it personal

Thank them for one real thing. The school runs, the early mornings, the way they looked after your father. It means more than “you’re wonderful”.

Mention your year. A trip, a new home, a hard season you came through together. One line is enough.

Add a plan. “Dinner at the harbor on the 27th, just us” turns a card into a promise.

Hide it well. Many couples tuck a card into a stocking or schedule an animated card for a date they’ve chosen.

If you’ll be in different places this Christmas, there are more lines in our page of messages for loved ones far away. For many more tones and occasions, see our main collection of card messages.

Our Harbour Lights card shows a little fishing harbor at night, painted houses, boats at their moorings and the lighthouse at the end of the pier, for a couple who love the sea, or who met beside it.

Questions

Should a Christmas card to my husband be romantic or funny?

Whichever sounds like the two of you. Many couples do both: a joke in the first line and something tender at the end.

What do I write to my wife if I’m not good with words?

Keep it short and true. “Thank you for this year. I love you more than ever. Merry Christmas.” Three plain sentences, written by you, beat any clever line.

Is it all right to send my partner an ecard?

Yes, especially if you’re apart, or if you’d like it to be waiting on a particular day. You can schedule a Paper Lantern card for a date you choose, and still leave a handwritten note on the pillow.
